Typography Survey - Number 10

Frederick M.Lawrence is a law professor who teaches at Boston University. In 1999 he wrote a book describing how much he was disturbed by racial violence in the United States. His book was titled "Punishing Hate: Bias Crimes under American Law". On his book he not only wanted to express how much he disagree with racial violence but he wanted express how he wants this violence to be appropriately punished. The typeface used on this book cover was Carnival, which was designed by Andrew Newman. The Carnival typeface made the book cover very successful and really made it stand out. The type face not only described what the author felt about "hate crimes" but it also gave the reader a good summary of what the book was going to be about. By looking at the book cover of this book I can say that good typography doesn't have to be beautiful all the time. Picking the right typography that describes feelings for a particular topic tends to result in successful designs. Every typeface should be used according to the message that you would like to give to your reader and audience. The design of this book was perfectly executed with good usage of typography which makes the book cover successful.

  1. Nice post Ivan. The font really does express a negative feeling... that of hate. It almost looks evil in nature, wicked.

I haven't read the book, but I do believe that there should be some kind of manner with which to deal with people who judge others negatively only because of their skin color or nationality.

Very nice example of the use of Typography. It definitely lends to the identity of the book, but wait... should we judge a book by it's cover ? Isn't that what Racism is ?
